Within BOM Insight, there is a Group Edit functionality for BOMs, which will allow you to Add Part Master Alternates or populate the MPNs if only the IPNs were uploaded in the list. You can also use the Add Part Category for IPNs in your list that are either not within your Part Master or its category is not defined. The Auto Match Selected to IPN function allows you to select unmapped line items in a BOM and automatically match to IPNs within your Part Master.
Add Part Master Alternates
Through the Group Edit, you can bring in your alternates for IPN/CPNs currently within your Part Master repository. Select your specific line items, click on Group Edit and then Add Part Master Alternates.
Otherwise, you can do this for the entire list by using the Select All, click on Group Edit and then on Add Part Master Alternates.
Within the Add Part Master Alternates modal, you'll need to specify: any Plant Exceptions Options, if you want to Include Alternates with Sourcing Status, your Preferred Alternates preferences, and from which Lifecycle Statuses you want to pull. You may need to scroll down in the modal to see all of the options available.
First, you can set your Plant Exceptions Options:
- Account for Plant Exceptions: if selected only alternates that don’t have an exception identified will be added.
- Ignore Plant Exceptions: if selected all alternates will be added, regardless of plant exceptions being defined for an alternate.
Next, specify how you want to Include Alternates with Sourcing Status:
- Approved
- Rejected
- Ongoing
- No Sourcing Status
Revising your Sourcing Status selections will only apply to new alternates added being added to your list.
Then check if you want to Include Only Preferred Alternates in the results. These are your alternates in Part Master that have been marked as the preferred MPN from all alternate options for that IPN. You can see more information in this article about Part Master in its alternates section.
Lastly, set if you want to revise and Include Alternates with Lifecycle from the following statuses as checked. Revising these selections will only apply to new alternates added being added to your list.

Once you're finished making your alternates preferences, click Save to import your Part Master alternates to the selected parts.
When alternates are added in the BOM, the manufacturer assigned for the line items will be considered a "Requested Manufacturer". The alternate's "manufacturer" will get carried through to the RFQ if you use the “Req. Manufacturer” option when creating your quote.
Add Part Category
Use the Add Part Category for your IPNs to easily add the category to your parts if the column was not mapped for a line item during upload. This is available for your IPNs that are either not in your Part Master, or in the Part Master but do not have a category defined.
This allows the part number to inherit the fields or columns of that category. Therefore, when your list from BOM Insight is used as a source file in an RFQ, you will see the corresponding category's columns for the part number in the RFQ.
In order to add a category to parts in bulk, select the parts that you want to add categories to by using the checkboxes on the far left. You can also use the Select All button when wanting to check your entire list of parts. Only parts that are not in Part Master can have their categories updated in your BOM. Selecting a part that is already in Part Master will not update its category.
Click on Group Edit and then on Add Part Category to open the modal. Using the Select Part Category dropdown, choose from the available options of categories to assign to these parts. Then click on Add Part Category.
This way the custom columns associated with a part category's template will be available in an RFQ for the part when this BOM is used as its source file in Quoting. However, within the BOM itself, you will not be able to add any of its custom columns information related to the category template when manually adding the category.
When a Part Category does not exist, then your admins will first need to create it through as a new Part Category template. For more information when manually adding categories, please read this article about custom columns being used through your Part Categories.
Auto Match Selected to IPN
This function allows you to select unmapped line items in a BOM and automatically match IPNs based on Preferred Status, Sourcing Status, Lifecycle Status, and Date Added (latest date) for multiple matches. More information can be found in the article about IPN Auto Matching.
